Ubuntu 11.10 Upgrade
« on: October 13, 2011, 07:17:20 PM »
I decided to upgrade to Ubuntu 11.10 64 bit today and after the 5 hour install and 2 hours of farting around to make it usable, I think I'm back to where I started.  ::)

This seems to be a major upgrade of the OS (Linux 3.0.0-12) and Gtk3. They must have taken some of the fat out of Unity as it ran on my laptop this time and didn't tell me my stuff was inadequate.

I tried ScriptBasic with GTK-Server and my GUI example I scripted worked. (fingers crossed on that one)

A lot of work to be current.  :'(

A comment from the Gambas author. (I'm not alone with my feelings about GNOME3 / Unity)

Quote
I have finally finished my upgrade to Ubuntu 11.10 too.

No problem with Ubuntu at the moment, but I want to make a big thanks to
Kmail2, Akonadi and Nepomuk.

This was the worst computing nightmare I have ever seen for a long time.

These three... entities ate all my memory, filled all my swap, took 100%
of my two cores, all that during hours, until being finally killed by
the kernel. I tried again three times, by starting for a fresh void
configuration and trying to convert my old mails, but no way... :-(

Being unable to read my mails, I finally decided to switch to
Thunderbird. Thanks to the 'xfmail2mbox.sh' script, I could convert the
maildir format to the mbox format used by Thunderbird.

So, now,the main philosophical question about all main Linux desktops is:

W...

T..

F...

!!!!!!

Should we invent some conspiration theory?

Did Microsoft paid some KDE and Gnome developers to create such a
bloated useless piece of garbage?

Hopefully, I will have a better mood after a good night.

If some other KDE users want some advices to drop KMail and use
Thunderbird, just ask!

Regards,

There are other great distros insted Ubuntu.
I like small distros like my favorite SliTaz 8)

I like Ubuntu as it's the most popular distribution for Linux. I'm running the classic GNOME shell so Unity isn't an issue for me.

I didn't think that was possible with 11.10 ?

You can pretty much run any Ubuntu shell you want. I'm running gnome classic and have the XUbuntu shell installed if I want to get down to the basics. You pick the shell you want to run at login time.
