What version of W10 are you under, John?
I'm not a dedicated W10 user yet. I'm staying with my good old W7 for at least one more year till MS drops its support entirely, and then I plan on shifting to W10 as there will be simply no more choice. Yet I have a
W10 Pro installed on one of my boxes that I'm using for compatibility tests mainly when Patrice reports my code failing on his W10 laptops. I've had this installation for over two years now, and I must say I've never experienced any sort of intrusion on behalf of MS. W10's update service just runs in the background transparently 24/7 and I'm just prompted from time to time if I'd prefer to install the updates right away or at some later point in time. And that's how W10 is supposed to work strategically keeping the system in the most up-to-date state not interfering with the user's activities.
I'm seeing nothing that I'd qualify as spam, and after 2 years of running it in such a "gentle" mode it's still blazing fast to start compared to my W7 workhorse that's overloaded with various auto-update services from innumerous pieces of programming and 3D dev software that I use on a day-to-day basis.
Be prepared for the W10 updates to revert many of your custom settings back to their initial states because MS have their own idea of how their product should work on the end user's boxes.
